Schwellen vs. Bildstrich.

This is the story of the advancing rails in cinema – How much influence had the invention of railroad and cinema on the development of a modern gaze? What did emerge from this relation?
Abstract – In this paper I investigate the topos of railway and film. Basically these two subjects are linked by movement: physical and virtual journeys. The history of travel is coupled with an interest in adventure and experience. A depiction of the historical development of pre-cinematic devices and travel opportunities characterizes the basic features of our modern cultural experience. The railway marks the transition to the modern age and introduces panoramatic vision. This is a required prerequisite for the understanding of motion pictures. L‘arrived d‘un train à la Ciotat (1895) is considered one of the first films and this constitutes an important moment in the film-rail history. Panoramatic Vision is at the same time presented as well as represented. This archetypal motif of a train entering a station is often copied in the following years and leads to the movie genre of railroad-movies. These films use the train in a variety of functions: for narration, as a symbols and as setting
In my film „14(35)“ I try to explore the links between films and railroads. I have collected and cataloged several ways railways can be depicted in motion pictures. My work distills the essence of these cinematic set-ups from the entire film history. A continuous movement, which starts with he Bothers Lumiére in 1895 and is easily continued by todays films, is being established in my practical work.
